Nestled in the breathtaking Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina, Lake Glenville offers the perfect summer getaway. As the highest lake east of the Mississippi, it maintains cool, refreshing temperatures throughout the summer, providing a perfect escape from the heat.
Formed in the 1940s when the Tuckasegee River was dammed, the lake was originally known as Thorpe Reservoir. Over time, it became the stunning Lake Glenville we know today, deeply connected to the surrounding forests and mountains, and serving as a beloved recreational spot for both locals and visitors.
Lake Glenville is renowned for its crystal-clear waters and 26 miles of scenic shoreline. With visibility reaching up to 20 feet, the lake showcases vibrant aquatic life and mesmerizing underwater beauty. This natural wonder attracts fishing enthusiasts from near and far, offering a diverse range of species such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, rainbow trout, brown trout, crappie, and even the occasional walleye. There's no shortage of opportunities for a memorable fishing experience.
Lake Glenville is graced by three major waterfalls, collectively known as the Triumphant Trifecta—Hurricane Falls, Norton Falls, and Mill Falls. These awe-inspiring waterfalls capture the essence of the lake's natural beauty and are accessible only by boat, making the journey to these spectacular sites an adventure in itself.
Hurricane Falls: The true headwaters of the lake, where Hurricane Creek cascades down, forming Lake Glenville and the west fork of the Tuckasegee River. This waterfall is popular with boaters and is also one of the best fishing spots on the lake, particularly just below the falls and about a half mile north.
Norton Falls: The second gem in the trifecta, Norton Falls is a breathtaking display of nature's power. As you approach by boat, the sound of rushing water grows louder, leading you to this stunning waterfall that spills from forested cliffs into the clear waters below. A peaceful haven for nature lovers, Norton Falls offers an immersive, tranquil experience.
Mill Falls: The final waterfall in the trifecta, Mill Falls provides a calming spectacle. The rhythmic flow of water, combined with the surrounding lush scenery, creates a serene atmosphere that captures the essence of the lake's beauty.
To fully experience the grandeur of Lake Glenville and its waterfalls, boating is a must. If you have your own boat, there are three main boat launches: Powerhouse Boat Ramp and Pine Creek Access at the northern end of the lake off Pine Creek Road, and Signal Ridge Marina on the west side of the lake off Hwy 107N, where you can also rent boats.
For a relaxing day by the water, the Pines Recreation Area offers a beautiful day-use beach, perfect for sunbathing and swimming. If you're looking to camp, Ralph J. Andrews Park at the southern end of the lake provides camping, swimming, picnicking, and boating opportunities.
